On December 13, we were honored at LOS BÓSCARES PERÚ 2021, winning in the “Forests and Climate Change” category for the implementation of our conservation projects REDD+ Castañeros at Madre de Dios and our reforestation projects at Campo Verde and Ucayali.

LOS BÓSCARES is an initiative launched in Mexico (2018) whose purpose is to promote the conservation of forest ecosystems by recognizing business initiatives that seek to protect—through sustainable and efficient practices—the biodiversity of the planet’s most valuable forests. This year, the initiative was replicated for the first time in Peru, thanks to the efforts of the organizations REFORESTAMOS MEXICO and AIDER PERU.

In this first edition of LOS BÓSCARES PERÚ, a distinguished panel of judges—comprising the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), and the civil society organizations AIDER and Reforestamos—analyzed public information from 169 companies across the country involved in conservation programs. Following a selection process, projects from 20 companies were nominated in six different categories: Forest Conservation; Zero-Deforestation Supply Chains; Forests and Climate Change; Promotion of Sustainable Forest Management; Reforestation and Forest Restoration; and Sustainable Forest Enterprises. BAM won in the “Forests and Climate Change” category, where it was nominated alongside three other major companies.

“Forests are of vital importance; they are a major source of flora and fauna, and they play a key role in our country’s sustainable development. More and more companies are considering forest protection as a very important part of their business models—environmentally conscious companies that resonate with their audience, not only because of the quality of their products, but also because of their values and respect for the raw materials they work with,” says Diana del Águila, director of Environmental Financing at MINAM.

As winners, the award for BAM was presented by the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) and the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) during a virtual event attended by individuals from various sectors interested in learning about the work of companies that have a positive impact on Peru’s forest ecosystems.

“Forest conservation is essential to curbing the global climate crisis. Our Amazon, which is so vital to environmental balance, faces latent and growing threats that endanger the health of our planet and the proper development of our society. That is why it is so important to coordinate public and private efforts to address the threats of deforestation occurring in our country, promoting the forestry sector as the driving force behind Peru’s sustainable development in the coming years. We extend our congratulations to all the organizations gathered here today and express our willingness, as Bosques Amazónicos , to work together in support of the conservation and restoration of our forests,” said Maria Alejandra Cantuarias, Marketing Manager at BAM, during the event.

As Levin Rojas, executive director of the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), points out, this recognition is very important for raising awareness among companies and commending the positive actions they take on forestry and environmental issues, thereby contributing to the improvement of our ecosystems—our forest and wildlife heritage—which serve as sources of water and support a variety of activities.
